Remember, the DOE didn’t even exist in any respect till 1980. Its creation was the consequence of a low cost deal Jimmy Carter made for the National Education Association’s endorsement.
Yet for most of the nation’s historical past, instructional coverage has rested in the fingers of states, cities, college boards — and fogeys.
True, to formally abolish the division, the prez would need Congress’ approval. That could also be an uphill battle for Republicans, however it’s one value combating.
In the meantime, if Trump can rein in DOE’s headcount — and slender the scope of its work — that alone will likely be a large victory.
