Drivers will know there are few issues worse than seeing a street closed signal, however certainly the thought of a 100 plus mile diversion is a full nightmare. Motorists have been as soon as compelled to observe a shocking 130 mile detour after a bypass was closed for 4 months as a consequence of landslides. The A890 Stromeferry Bypass was closed for 4 months from December 2011 to April 2012 after rockfall prevented entry for automobiles.

The native council tried to mitigate the diversion by placing on companies reminiscent of an further early prepare, passenger and car ferries in addition to additional buses. The street closures are believed to have value Highland Council a staggering £2.8million, with £203,000 spent on ferries and buses. The route was affected by additional street closures in 2014 which left locals caught and faculties closed.

However, the incidents prompted native chiefs to look into methods to deal with the issues and probably re-route the bypass.

Highland Council beforehand stated: “The Stromeferry bypass is an approximately 12km long section of public road alongside the southern shore of Loch Carron.

“Since opening in 1970, a 4.5km section between Ardnarff and Cuddies’ Point has been subject to a number of landslide and rock fall events. These have caused temporary road and rail closures resulting in route diversions of up to 130 miles.”

When the bypass was closed, drivers needed to take a staggering diversion of over 200km as an alternative of the same old 18-mile journey between Lochcarron and Plockton. In 2018, Highland Council started important works to stabilise the rock face with a collection of night-time closures in place for upkeep work.

According to the Council, the latest slope stabilisation works which have been accomplished final winter with all the upkeep now full. However, evaluation has urged that building a fully new alternative route at Stromeferry may value the council up to £159 million.

Highlands and Islands MSP Rhoda Grant known as on the Scottish Government to help fund enhancements to the route. However, transport bosses claimed the street didn’t qualify for trunk street standing because it did not offer direct entry to a port, airport or important developments.

Ms Grant stated: “How many years using its full capital budget allocation would it take for it to fix the road? It is absolutely not feasible.

“The Scottish Government’s response has basically said to those communities that it is tough, that Highland Council cannot afford to do the work because the government does not fund it adequately and that it is washing its hands of the whole situation. That is not a sustainable position.”
