It’s not uncommon to see pets accompanying their owners on flights.

For some animal enthusiasts, bringing their furry friend along is as crucial as carrying their passport. However, one dog owner took pet travel to a new level by booking a business class seat for their cherished Dalmatian, Spotty.

The adventurous canine, whose travel exploits are documented on the Instagram account @spottytheswissdalmatian, recently embarked on a 6,000-mile journey from Switzerland to Japan in style.

A video shared on her Instagram shows Spotty lounging in the business class section of Zurich Airport before settling into her own seat on a Singapore Airlines flight to Tokyo. Onboard, Spotty was treated to all the comforts of business class, including plush blankets and a seat that converts into a fully flat bed.

In one clip, the charming Dalmatian is even seen engrossed in an inflight movie, much to the delight of passing cabin crew members. While it’s unclear what culinary delights Spotty indulged in during the flight, it’s safe to say she thoroughly enjoyed her business class experience.

The video has since garnered nearly six million views and over 402,000 likes, with commenters expressing their surprise and delight at Spotty’s high-flying adventure. One user commented: “She is behaving better than many humans.”

Another gushed: “She’s the best girl! My favourite travel influencer!” A third wrote: “Willing to pay any amount to sit beside you, Spotty!”

Meanwhile, some followers were skeptical about the dog’s presence on the flight. The owner addressed these concerns by explaining: “Spotty is a registered service dog for those people who are asking. Singapore Airlines only allow fully vaccinated, government vet certified, registered service dogs in the cabin as far as I’m aware.”

How to get cheap business class flights

For those inspired by Spotty’s luxurious travels, and looking to snag a business class seat themselves, there are several strategies to consider. One could simply shell out a significant sum; for instance, return business class flights from London to Tokyo start at around £6,800 with Japan Airlines, while British Airways charges about £1,000 more.

Alternatively, frequent flyers might prefer accumulating air miles through branded credit cards offered by airlines like British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, which can eventually lead to a business class upgrade at a fraction of the full fare.

Lastly, one might try their luck with a business class seat auction – a practice that online travel agent Kayak notes is becoming increasingly common among airlines, allowing passengers with eligible tickets to bid for an upgrade.

“It’s pretty simple: in the days or weeks leading up to your departure date, you’ll get an email from the airline inviting you to make an offer on a seat upgrade,” the advice revealed. “Auctions usually impose a minimum bid amount, so to give yourself a good chance try bidding at least 25% above that.”

For travelers seeking a more luxurious experience, Kayak recommends planning well ahead and choosing less popular travel days. It suggests flying on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Saturdays as optimum times to nab low-cost business class seats.

Those feeling fortunate may also capitalize on special occasions. Travel guru Immanuel Debeer shared: “Chatting with staff about the reasons for your travel is an excellent chance to secure an upgrade, but only if you stick to the most important tip – be polite.

“Is it your birthday on the day you fly? Are you on your way to your honeymoon? Is it a special anniversary? Finding a way to casually drop this into a conversation with the check-in staff is a great way to increase your chances of an upgrade.”
