Texas Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to slap New Yorkers with a “100% tariff” in the event that they flee to the Lone Star State if Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor.
“After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC,” the Republican governor tweeted on the eve of the mayoral election.
It wasn’t instantly clear why he needed to punish new arrivals, or if such a tariff would even be doable.

Mamdani’s “Tax the rich” coverage has long raised fears of a max exodus of New York City’s wealthiest residents — with a ballot this week suggesting more than 750,000 would flee.
Abbott joined the refrain of GOPers tearing into the far-left candidate forward of the election — as they warned towards voting for him.
President Trump, for his half, threw his help behind Mamdani’s rival, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who’s operating as an impartial, simply hours earlier than New Yorkers took to polling cubicles.
“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He additionally threatened to withhold federal funds from the Big Apple if Mamdani is victorious.
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home,” Trump stated.
