NFL legend Brett Favre did little to hide his disdain for this 12 months’s headliner for the Super Bowl halftime show.

Back in September, the NFL introduced that three-time Grammy winner Bad Bunny would take middle stage at Levi’s Stadium during the Big Game in February 2026. The determination was swiftly met with a fierce wave of backlash, with President Donald Trump claiming the league’s selection was “absolutely ridiculous.”

On the latest episode of the ‘4th and Favre’ podcast, Favre similarly criticized the NFL for not choosing a halftime performer who “loves this country.” In his eyes, the league should’ve gone with someone like Jason Aldean or George Strait. It comes after Danica Patrick also slammed the announcement. 

“I’d pick someone who — maybe Jason Aldean, or, you know, someone who loves this country and that everyone could relate to,” Favre explained “I think Jason Aldean right now is as big a patriot and has a great voice.

“I threw George Strait out, and he may be like, ‘I ain’t doing that.’ I don’t know. But the guy has, I don’t know how many Number 1s he’s had, but good lord. It’s enormous. And I don’t think he’s ever done it, but that would be a pretty cool act to watch.”

According to Favre, a strong Super Bowl performance “really grabs” the audience — as was the case when Whitney Houston belted an emotional rendition of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ prior to Super Bowl XXV in January 1991.

“I remember when Whitney Houston sang the national anthem and I was blown away,” Favre recalled. “If you didn’t have tears in your eyes watching and listening to that, something’s wrong with you. I envision a national anthem and a halftime show, they’re two different things but, it really grabs you.”

Though Favre did not provide any specific reasons for why he believes Bad Bunny might not love the United States, other conservative figures have cited his public criticism of the nation’s immigration policy and Trump, who claimed that he’d never heard of the Puerto Rican artist.

“I by no means heard of him,” Trump stated. “I don’t know who he is, I don’t know why they’re doing it, it’s like crazy. … Then they blame it on some promoter that they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Roc Nation — which annually produces the Super Bowl halftime show — and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell have stuck by their decision, with the latter conceding that nearly all performers draw blowback upon initially being announced.

“He’s one of the leading and most popular in the world. That’s what we try to achieve,” he stated at the league’s assembly in Manhattan final month. “It’s an important stage for us, an important element to the entertainment value. It’s carefully thought through. I think it’s going to be an exciting and a united moment.

“I’m not sure we’ve ever selected an artist where we didn’t have some blowback or criticism. It’s pretty hard to do when you literally have millions of people who are watching. But we’re confident it’s going to be a great show. He understands the platform that he’s on. The show will evolve from here. I’m not saying there won’t be additional talent but that’s always the way it works.”
