AA warns gritters will be out in force on UK roads | Tech News
The AA has warned drivers that gritting lorries will be out on UK roads this week due to the acute heatwave. Usually a common sight on our roads during winter due to the risk of snow and ice, gritting lorries will be used this week for a very completely different purpose.
The AA stated drivers may see gritters out on some roads this week with the potential for surfaces to melt or change into sticky beneath the heat, with heavy visitors even inflicting them to rut in some locations.
Edmund King, AA president, stated: “The main risk for drivers is not that the road suddenly ‘melts’ everywhere, but that patches can become tacky or uneven. That can affect braking, steering and grip, especially for motorcyclists and cyclists, and can also throw up loose material.
“If drivers come across a softened or damaged surface, they should slow down, avoid harsh braking or steering, and leave extra space from the vehicle in front.”
The AA additionally warned that heat can put further pressure on autos, with under-inflated, broken or outdated tires notably more likely to fail in hotter situations.
“Before a long journey, check tyre pressures, tread and sidewalls, and carry water in case you are delayed,” Mr King stated.
“In these temperatures the advice remains never to leave passengers or animals unattended in parked cars even for short periods when the interior of the car can soon get as hot as an oven.”
It comes after the Met Office issued a uncommon pink climate warning for the UK, affecting 50 UK areas together with London, Birmingham and elements of the midlands, beginning at 9am on Wednesday.
Yet more areas are affected by an amber climate warning for excessive temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday too.
The Met Office stated in its newest forecast: “Temperatures will quickly rise on Monday and are forecast to reach 34°C in southern parts of England. However, this brings with it the chance of thundery showers for some.
“The heat will build further into Tuesday, with highs of 37°C forecast for southern England and 35°C in southeast Wales. The peak of the heatwave is now forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures are expected to climb to at least 39°C and there remains a chance of this being exceeded in places”
