Andy Roddick topped Coco Gauff the “best in the world” at one particular talent after she emerged victorious on the French Open.

Earlier this month, Gauff turned the first American champion to win at Roland Garros since Serena Williams in 2015 by defeating Aryna Sabalenka, whose post-match feedback have drawn appreciable backlash regardless of her makes an attempt to make clear what she meant.

On the heels of the momentous achievement, Gauff is already “trying to forget” the French Open as she turns her consideration to Wimbledon, a floor that the 21-year-old has struggled on in the previous.

Roddick, for one, believes that Gauff possesses the instruments needed to win the match. In specific, the previous world No. 1 in males’s singles praised the American phenom for skill to deliver the worst out of her opponents.

“Here’s the thing. Like, we always talk about if she plays a round of 16 or a quarter-final and even the final against Sabalenka, and everyone’s talking about how they didn’t play that well, and you know, maybe Coco didn’t play that well,” Roddick mentioned whereas making an look on the Tennis Channel Live podcast.

“Sorry, making the other person play badly is absolutely a skill. And we always kind of refer to it as a negative. She is the best in the world at kind of dragging you into this game with her, where she can rely on different spins and play defense and kind of one more ball mentality, and that’s exactly what she did in the final.

“The wind was great for her, right? Then she didn’t have to go toe-to-toe on the forehand side. She could let the ball flutter up on Aryna Sabalenka, but that’s not an accident. That’s taking advantage of the situation. That’s called strategy, and I don’t know that we give her enough credit for it.”

Gauff’s victory at Roland Garros marked her second profession Grand Slam title, together with her final main win coming on the U.S. Open in 2023. Looking forward to Wimbledon, the Atlanta, Georgia, emphasised the need to stay grounded and motivated after she turned complacent following her New York triumph.

DON’T MISS:

“I think I can give myself the best shot [of winning Wimbledon] by trying to keep the moment [winning the French Open] as minimised as possible,” Gauff mentioned on the ‘Nice Talk with Nikki Ogunnaike’ podcast. “I’m kind of trying to forget the Roland Garros win, honestly.”

When asked to expand further, she added: “Just to remain hungry. After [my] U.S. Open win, for the remainder of that season I used to be like, ‘I gained the U.S. Open, the season’s virtually over, I’m fairly happy.’

“I don’t want to approach the rest of this season from that standpoint, also because there are two other Grand Slams that are very possible for me to win. So I think I’ve learned from that mindset, and I’m just going to try to forget [Roland Garros]. Not now, I’m definitely remembering it now. But when the time comes, when I step out on Centre Court at Wimbledon, I will definitely try to forget.”
