Job seekers determined for a new gig now must take care of a totally fashionable hurdle: applicant monitoring systems that mechanically give desire to candidates who used AI to jot down their resumes.

A current research discovered AI-powered applicant monitoring systems, or ATS, not solely prefer AI-written resumes over these composed by people — they’re more prone to put candidates on the short checklist in the event that they used the identical massive language model the company already employs.

“LLMs, when used as evaluators, systematically prefer resumes they generated themselves over equivalent resumes written by humans,” in line with the research, “AI Self-preferencing in Algorithmic Hiring: Empirical Evidence and Insights.”

The bias found by researchers Jiannan Xu of the University of Maryland, Gujie Li of the National University of Singapore and Jane Jiang of Ohio State University means robust candidates may get left within the mud.

“Left unaddressed, this bias can distort hiring outcomes by systematically advantaging candidates who use the same LLM as employers, while disadvantaging equally qualified applicants who do not,” they wrote within the August research, which was revealed on the analysis sharing platform arxiv.org in February.

Companies and job hunters have already been utilizing AI within the hiring course of, however the research reveals a new wrinkle, stated Boston University Professor Emma Wiles, who research data systems and AI’s influence on the labor market.

“Instead of AI tools being used to find the applicant’s true abilities, you’re gonna find applicants that the AI thinks sounds like itself,” she stated.

The researchers used 2,245 human-written resumes of their research, then created “multiple counterfactual versions using a range of state-of-the-art LLMs,” together with GPT-4o and Deepseek-V3.1.

They then simulated hiring pipelines for twenty-four occupations, and located the AI evaluators have been 23% to 60% more prone to choose candidates which used the identical LLM.

“If left unchecked, self-preference could subtly distort evaluative processes across hiring, education, publishing, and more.”

More than 300,000 job cuts have been introduced between January and April 2026, significantly within the tech sector, analysis firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas discovered.

Workers ought to try for instruments that help improve human writing, not substitute it, Wiles advised.

“It assists, but it doesn’t take the place of your effortful writing. It’s improving what you’ve already written and it’s not crowding out your true self,” she stated. “Your self is going to be visible in what you’ve written.”
