The Issue: Canada and the European Union levying retaliatory tariffs against the United States.
A stock droop or recession can shortly flip into a full-scale despair, as seen with the Smoot-Hawley tariffs of 1930 during the Great Depression, which resulted in a 65% decline in world commerce (“Canadian pol blinks first,” March 12).
Thankfully, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick appears to be working additional time — even perhaps hourly — to clarify financial actuality to President Trump.
I admired Trump for championing forgotten blue-collar employees, small traders and stay-at-home mother and father.
But proper now, he’s in rampage mode, like Animal Mother in “Full Metal Jacket” — a soldier who scorns any authority besides his own.
Spoiler alert: Reckless tariffs don’t finish properly.
They can cripple a number of economies and hit probably the most susceptible Americans — those barely making ends meet.

Canadians are high quality with imposing tariffs on US merchandise however livid when Washington does the identical.
If they have been such good associates, why wouldn’t they assist eliminating tariffs on each side?

It doesn’t appear to be Trump checked the dictionary for the phrase “tariff,” so possibly he doesn’t understand that it’s the client who pays the tariffs on imported merchandise (“Trump’s Irish up on E.U. tariffs,” March 13).
It isn’t the nation that manufactures and exports its items to us that pays: It’s us, the patrons! Meanwhile, he’s alienating our conventional associates and allies, leaving us remoted.

The Issue: Elon Musk calling Sen. Mark Kelly a ‘traitor’ following the senator’s Ukraine go to.
Elon Musk referred to as Sen. Mark Kelly a traitor for visiting Ukraine in assist of its battle for survival (“Mark Kelly accuses Trump of ‘trying to weaken’ Ukraine, fires back at Elon Musk for branding him a ‘traitor,’ ” March 12).
The hypocrisy is thick enough to require one of Musk’s chainsaws to cut.
Kelly honorably served 25 years within the Navy, flew fight missions within the Gulf War and piloted NASA space shuttles—whereas Musk was busy seeing how many youngsters he might have with how many ladies.
(If you’re conserving rating: 14 youngsters, 4 moms.)
Yet MAGA loyalists fall for President Trump’s theatrics.
Supporting allies or being captured in battle doesn’t make somebody a traitor.
That title is more applicable to Musk and his cohort, the true allies of Russia.

Shame on Mark Kelly.
After 4 years within the Senate, he’s instantly flying to Ukraine, attempting to scuttle President Trump’s peace deal with Putin.
He needs to be working to help his fellow astronauts stranded on the space station.
Instead, he’s busy choosing fights with Elon Musk, who’s offering Ukraine’s communication community through Starlink.
Kelly has acted out of flip.
