22-year-old phenom Carson Hocevar has ruffled more than a few feathers of established NASCAR veterans with his brazen approach to racing.
43-year-old A.J. Allmendinger was the one to take offense during last weekend’s EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at the Course of the Americas.
Hocevar attempted to pass Allmendinger into the seventh position during lap 15 before the pair found themselves jostling for the top spot.
“Be careful with this dude, you know what you’re dealing with,” Allmendinger’s spotter warned. The 43-year-old was unmoved: “He doesn’t know who he’s ——- dealing with,” he responded.
Neither driver ended up impacted by the minor skirmish. Hocevar finished the day in 13th while Allmendinger had to settle for 30th.
This comes just a week after Hocevar and his No. 77 Chevy wound up Ryan Blaney, Ross Chastain, and Kyle Busch at the Atlanta Motor Speedway en route to a surprising second-place finish in the Ambetter Health 400.
“Go tell the 77 he’s done the same move 10 times. I don’t care if I wreck the whole field. I’m over him,” Busch said over the radio at one point.
Hocevar didn’t seem to care post-race. “I’m not going to apologize for having a shot to win the race and seeing a trophy, he said. “I thought it worked out really well… Obviously, we had a shot to win the race, and I was, I think, the most aggressive. So, the end result means if you play aggressively and you have a really fast car, you can take advantage of being aggressive.”

Some of his comments seemed like he was intentionally trying to wind up his opposition. “We’re here to win races, not build boy bands, love each other, or play on playgrounds together,” Hocevar continued.
His driving earned him a call from NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin. “One of the most shocking was Mark Martin tried to hunt my phone number down and [he] was tweeting and doing everything,” Hocevar said of the call. “Everyone that wants to be negative about it right, [but] the most respectful driver was giving me a lot of endorsement.”
