Chase Briscoe makes scary Shane van Gisbergen – Sports News
Chase Briscoe has opened up on what it was wish to hunt down Shane van Gisbergen at Sonoma final weekend because the Kiwi took his third victory of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season and a second in a row following on from Chicago. Briscoe, the No. 19 for Joe Gibbs Racing, completed second behind SVG in California and tried his best to move the previous Supercars champion within the ultimate stage.
However, whether or not from restarts or simply making an attempt to get close to the 36-year-old, Briscoe by no means discovered a method to move NASCAR‘s road and highway course King. Every time Briscoe would get close, the Trackhouse Racing star would draw back, virtually effortlessly.
“I don’t know if I really saw everything (Shane van Gisbergen) had, truthfully. I felt like every time I would get close; he would just start driving back away,” Briscoe admitted. “We were definitely the second-best car. I don’t really know what more I need – maybe a little bit a grip, but even if I had a little more grip, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to gain the speed that he had.
“But total, great day for the Bass Pro Shops Toyota. This is by far my worst race monitor, so to run second to him, it positively means a lot, so proud of the day.”
SVG is now tied in the Cup Series for the most wins in 2025 alongside Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, and Christopher Bell. He locked his place in the Cup playoffs with a win in Mexico City last month, but followed it up with dominance in Chicago and at Sonoma.
Despite the three wins, SVG is 26th in the Cup standings, with the ex-Supercars champ yet to win on a traditional NASCAR oval. “This is superb. This is why we go racing. I had a great time. It’s superior to have Red Bull on the car this weekend,” SVG said after winning the Cup race and finishing second in Xfinity. “Trackhouse Racing gave me a great Chevrolet again. What a great couple of weeks!
“Just to execute, make no mistakes, have great pit stops, great strategy and be able to hold them off there at the end – it’s incredible. Chase (Briscoe) was driving really well. We had a lot of fun there. … On the last restart, I thought he (Briscoe) jumped a little bit.
“I used to be simply making an attempt to do what I may to get in place in Turn 2. That final one, I needed to give him a bit of rub, however that was it. I’m simply over the moon.”
DON’T MISS:
Ovals are Van Gisbergen’s Achilles heel. It’ll likely play a key factor in where his season finishes in the playoffs this year, with his other rivals used to notching wins on such tracks. However, Larson believes that SVG will be a legitimate title contender once he becomes accustomed to ovals.
“You know, he is so good, and it is uncommon that you just see anyone stand out and distance himself from the competitors as a lot as he’s,” said Larson.
“He’s means, means, means higher than us on the highway course stuff. And he is obtained his own approach, you possibly can call it. Not his own as a result of the remaining of the world does it — right-foot braking, clutching and all that stuff.
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Like, there’s zero chance I can learn how to do that. And even if I did, like there’s zero chance that I can have it be better than what I’m probably doing with left-foot braking. So yeah, he’s just so good.”
