Coco Gauff told ‘one thing is not proper’ as legend – Sports News
Coco Gauff’s struggles in 2025 have garnered the eye of many pundits and former stars, with former world No. 9 Andrea Petkovic the newest to share her feedback.
The American star one of the best gamers within the sport heading into the 12 months, although her current performances have left a lot to be desired. In specific, Gauff’s serving points have been evident, with the 21-year-old’s issues on full show during her Indian Wells outing.
As the star seems to be for methods to right her serving points, Petkovic has entered the discourse together with her take. Speaking on her ‘Becker Petkovic’ podcast, the 37-year-old gave her opinion on why Gauff has struggled, claiming that her serve grip might be the offender of her struggles.
“This is my hot take,” Petkovic started, per Tennis 365. “I think what happened when she hired the new coach, Matt Daly, he changed her grip on the serve a bit. My theory is, when you change a grip, with time, if you don’t remember it all the time, it goes back to the old grip – If you’re not constantly being warned: ‘Hey, think about the new grip, think about the new grip.’
“In the last two, three tournaments of last year and the first two tournaments of this year, she had hardly any double faults, one or two per match. Now in the match against Linette, twelve double faults.”
Petkovic then recalled Gauff’s shocking loss to Belinda Bencic at Indian Wells in the Round of 16, adding that the American had eight double faults in the fateful loss. With how Gauff has struggled in recent tournaments, Petkovic believes that the star is inadvertently reverting back to how her form was before the changes, leading to mixed results.
“So, something is not right with the serve. My theory is that the grip has gone back to the old one, and therefore, it does not work at the moment,” she concluded.
Petkovic’s comments come after Gauff suffered an upset loss to Magda Linette in the Round of 16 at the Miami Open. Gauff finished with numerous double faults and recorded 45 unforced errors over the course of two sets while also failing to get her first serve in over 50 percent.
After the loss, Gauff didn’t mince words on her performance in front of her home crowd. In particular, the young star was extremely critical of all aspects of her game, electing not to single out any particular facet that failed her against Linette in the loss.
Don’t Miss
“It wasn’t great today,” she admitted to reporters after the fact. “It hasn’t been the last two weeks, so I’m just trying to figure that out. “Serve, return, forehand, backhand, everything honestly. Just one of those days I felt off on everything.”
She added that the problems have begun to affect her mindset, particularly with how she is feeling, stating: “It’s just a series of not having great results and feeling confident on the court.”
With everything that’s happened, Rick Macci, Venus and Serena Williams’ former coach, continued to have faith in Gauff. “There is a fine line between Winning/Losing. Everything is magnified over the rainbow when you Lose in sports. Around the corner from problems adversity and Defeat will be a rock solid Coco that will hard to Beat. @CocoGauff,” he wrote on X.
