College basketball coach quits to take over rival – Sports News
Bryan Hodgson has swapped South Florida for Providence after the latter introduced him as their new males’s basketball coach.
On Sunday, it was introduced that Providence can be hiring Hodgson as its subsequent males’s basketball coach following USF’s elimination from March Madness by the hands of Louisville, 83-79.
The defeat to Louisville was Hodgson’s ultimate sport in charge of the Bulls program, a position he took on back in 2025. The 38-year-old, who beforehand coached Arkansas State for 2 years between 2023 and 2025, spent one season with South Florida, guiding the workforce to a 25-9 document.
“In this new revenue share/NIL landscape, I knew we needed a coach with the energy, passion and the skills to get us back to competing for championships and playing in the NCAA tournament,” Providence athletic director Steve Napolillo mentioned, by way of ESPN.
The assertion continued, “Bryan has revived two Division 1 programs and it is our goal for him to bring new life into Friar men’s basketball. He has 18 years of college basketball coaching experience, including five as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama.
“Over the final three years, Bryan has efficiently used analytics, his recruiting expertise and training to win 70 video games. Bryan is a winner and we need a profitable tradition at Providence College.”
The decision to bring in Hodgson came following a disappointing season for Providence under former NBA guard Kim English. Having led the Friars to a winning season in his first year with the program, English and Providence went 12-20 last season.
This year, they went 15-18, culminating in English’s firing.
In a statement, Hodgson said, “I’m extremely honored and excited to be named the subsequent head coach of the Providence Friars males’s basketball program.
“This is a program with a proud tradition, passionate fan base, and a city that truly embraces its team. We’re going to build something that reflects that pride. We will be tough, disciplined, and relentless in our pursuit of excellence.”
