NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr has revealed the one request he considers a “non-negotiable” relating to his funeral.

During the newest episode of the Bless your ‘Hardt podcast, Earnhardt Jr recalled a conversation from a night out with his wife Amy, explaining that their conversations often revolve around music. The NASCAR legend said the couple were at a bar using TouchTunes when he decided to play “Eminence Front” by The Who, describing it as one of his favorite songs of all time.

Earnhardt Jr. went on to reveal that the one “non-negotiable” request he has for his funeral, with the former driver insisting that the song must be played when the time comes and explained that he has already made his wishes clear to his wife, Amy, telling her he wants the song included in his funeral plans. The 50-year-old said he does not mind when the track is played during the service, but wants it to be part of the occasion.

The NASCAR icon joked that playing Eminence Front would turn the funeral into more of a celebration, while Amy admitted she initially refused the request just to tease him. She added that Earnhardt Jr. talks about his funeral wishes frequently and has even started a list of requests in case they are needed in the future.

Despite the conversation, both agreed they hope the plans will not be needed for many years, with Earnhardt Jr. joking that there is little chance his favourite song choice will change.

The song, written by guitarist Pete Townshend, explores themes of wealth, excess and escapism, portraying a world where people attempt to hide their struggles behind a glamorous façade.

Earnhardt Jr. also opened up about his thoughts on funerals and how he would like his own memorial to be remembered, admitting that creating a true celebration of life can be difficult while people are grieving.

The NASCAR legend said many people express a desire for their funeral to be a joyful occasion rather than a sad one, but he believes emotions are difficult to control during such moments. Earnhardt Jr. explained that close family members should be able to grieve however they choose, while guests often enter a service unsure of how to react and tend to follow the mood of the room.

“The only thing I’ve at all times discovered attention-grabbing is when people say, ‘I don’t need everybody to really feel unhappy. I need everybody to rejoice.’ But it’s so laborious to try this when people are grieving. It actually is.
