Dale Earnhardt Jr. discovered himself at a main crossroads in his profession back in 2007.
After a fallout together with his stepmother Teresa Earnhardt, the proprietor of Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI), Junior determined it was time to forge his own path. The announcement was monumental, and several other prime NASCAR groups coveted what he delivered to the desk.
However, as Earnhardt Jr. just lately revealed on his ‘Dale Jr. Download’ podcast that he and his sister, Kelley, have been merely unprepared for what awaited them during a assembly with one of these suitors — Joe Gibbs Racing. The numbers offered left him bodily uncomfortable. Meanwhile, Earnhardt Jr. shockingly defined that he may return to Daytona.
“I went all the way to Washington to meet with Joe. And we were at Dan Snyder’s house… Really intimidating, honestly,” Earnhardt Jr. recalled. “It was hard to think about racing and working with Joe in that environment. And Joe gave us a term sheet, and the numbers on that made me physically nauseous because it was so big.”
The response was so visceral that Earnhardt Jr. instantly instructed his sister they needed to depart.
“I was like, ‘Holy f—–g s–t Kelley.’ I said, ‘We got to go home. We got to talk. I don’t know what Rick’s going to put in front of me. But I’m ready to leave,’” he said.

Joe Gibbs Racing was undoubtedly one of NASCAR’s premier organizations in 2007, and the team wasn’t going to hold back in its pursuit of the sport’s most popular driver. The Earnhardt name alone carried immense value.
But for Junior, who was already dealing with the immense pressure of leaving his late father’s team, the numbers were almost too much to comprehend.
“I went to see Rick, and he tried to offer me a time period sheet… I was like, ‘I do not even need to see it. You and Kelley focus on the numbers, and y’all can deal with it,'” Earnhardt Jr. told Hendrick. “‘I do not even need to know what you are going to pay me. You’re going to pay me a lot of money that I in all probability do not deserve. If it is something like what they pitched me at Joe Gibbs, it’s going to be enough.'”
Earnhardt Jr. and his sister’s initial plan was to run DEI together for the rest of their lives. But after their father’s passing and the subsequent issues with Teresa, that dream was no longer possible.
In the end, Earnhardt Jr. signed a five-year deal with Hendrick Motorsports in June 2007. He never won a Cup championship, but he did claim nine wins, a second Daytona 500 victory in 2014, and, perhaps most importantly, a sense of belonging that no term sheet could have quantified.
Still, he can’t help but wonder what might have been. “I do not remorse it, however in all probability going to Gibbs,” he told The Athletic in 2023. “I’ve no regrets over how all of that performed out. But you can’t help however surprise, ‘What would it not have been like had I went the opposite route?'”
