Denny Hamlin probed on JGR driver meeting after Ty | Sports News

Denny Hamlin revealed that this week’s Joe Gibbs Racing crew meeting was “productive” after the 44-year-old and teammate Ty Gibbs suffered an on-track dustup.

On Lap 111 of final week’s USA Today 301 — the opening race of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Round of 12 — Hamlin and Gibbs have been racing for place when the latter entered low and slid up high into his lane. The former didn’t take kindly to the maneuver, promptly making contact with the left rear quarter panel of the No. 54 Toyota in Turn 1 and sending him spinning into the surface wall at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

“Does Ty know we’re going for a championship? What the f—?” Hamlin shouted over the crew radio. “Are they afraid to talk to him? That’s what I feel like. They’re just scared of him.”

Following the fiery incident, Hamlin — who later expressed remorse for how the whole lot performed out — asserted that he and Gibbs buried the hatchet due to a collection of behind-the-scenes conversations.

“I think they’re in a good place. You know, we had some meetings this week,” Hamlin instructed reporters at Kansas Speedway. “I thought they were all productive meetings, but obviously, the guts of that obviously, going to need to be confidential.”

While Hamlin stopped short of divulging what was particularly introduced up during the conferences, he did shed gentle on the format of stated discussions. “Yeah, all the drivers had an opportunity to speak and try to come up with a plan, and I think we did our best to come up with one,” Hamlin defined. “That’s it, that’s all I have.”

Hamlin, to his credit, reiterated that he would’ve favored to deal with the scenario much better somewhat than enable his feelings to take over. “I mean, certainly,” he stated. “Absolutely. I definitely got hot under the collar, and it went too far on my end, and certainly there was things that I wish I could have done a little differently.”

Although Hamlin is actively seeking to secure his first-career Cup Series championship whereas Gibbs just isn’t competing within the postseason, fellow Joe Gibbs Racing drivers insisted that his conduct was by no means acceptable.

“It was productive, and hopefully we do better moving forward,” Christopher Bell stated of the crew conferences. “It’s definitely fair to say that a line was crossed, and that was bad.

“We do not need to get any teammates wrecked. Hopefully, we do higher shifting ahead. … We all need to see one another do effectively and succeed. The solely factor that I’ll sum this up is that we had a productive meeting, and I really feel optimistic about adjustments shifting ahead.”

Chase Briscoe expressed a similar sentiment, noting that JGR could do a better job of picking each other up rather than tearing one another down. “It’s one thing that, honestly, we in all probability have not finished the best job at,” he stated.

“And that was the dialog basically. We could make it means simpler on ourselves. It’s already exhausting to win a championship as it’s. Coach has been on this for … years. He’s solely received 5. And we’re not doing ourselves any favors, as exhausting as it’s, simply on one another.”
