Owners of a diesel-powered car have been urged to keep away from taking it to the storage for the remaining of March because the price of fuel set to fall in the approaching weeks.

The price of petrol and diesel elevated for the fifth consecutive month in February 2025, with motorists spending up to £80 filling the tank of their car.

However, Simon Williams, Head of Policy for the RAC, the falling wholesale price of oil is set to have a constructive impression on costs on the pumps.

He defined: “Drivers have had to endure five months of rising prices, so it’s good news wholesale prices have fallen significantly, and forecourt totem signs should soon be reflecting this.

“We expect retailers to start cutting prices this week as more buy in new supply at lower prices. As long as the cost of a barrel of crude oil stays around the $70 (£54) mark, we believe there’s a chance drivers could see petrol heading back down towards 130p a litre.”

According to the RAC, the standard price of petrol in the center of March 2025 was 139p per litre, whereas a litre of diesel was priced at an average of 146p.

As a consequence, drivers with a diesel-powered car that has a 55-litre tank are presently paying £80.33 to fill it up – round £3.50 more than they had been charged in October 2024.

However, the price might begin to fall in the approaching weeks due to the falling price of wholesale oil, which dropped from $82 (£63) per barrel in January 2025 to $69 in the center of March.

The price of oil is often decided by the present provide and international demand in addition to any geopolitical occasions happening on the time.

The costliest oil was recorded shortly after the worldwide financial disaster in the summer time of 2008, with costs reaching $147.27 (£114) per barrel, falling sharply to simply $40 (£31) later in the yr.

However, while the price of wholesale oil is extraordinarily unlikely to drop to that quantity anytime quickly, the RAC has urged retailers to keep their fuel costs aggressive and keep away from pointless profiteering.
