Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the Adelaide International, citing that he is “not quite physically ready to compete.”

The 10-time Australian Open file holder introduced his withdrawal on Monday by means of a social media assertion. Taking to social media, Djokovic defined: “To all my fans in Adelaide, unfortunately, I’m not quite physically ready to compete in the Adelaide International next week.

He continued: “It’s personally very disappointing to me as I’ve such great reminiscences of profitable the title there two years in the past. I used to be actually enthusiastic about returning, because it actually felt like taking part in at home. My focus is now on my preparation for the Australian Open, and I sit up for arriving in Melbourne quickly and seeing all of the tennis followers in Australia.”

Tennis Australia had touted this year’s men’s lineup as among Adelaide’s most formidable in tournament history. Jack Draper was also on the entry list but has since bowed out of the entire Australian swing, reports the Express.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (No. 14), Jiri Lehecka (No. 19) and Tommy Paul (No. 20) remain the sole top-20 competitors scheduled to participate when the main draw kicks off on Monday, January 12.

Lehecka defeated Draper in the 2024 championship match, following Djokovic’s victory over Sebastian Korda the previous year. The Brisbane International is currently underway, featuring players such as Davidovich Fokina, Lehecka, and Paul, along with world No. 13 Daniil Medvedev. Top-30 competitors include Cameron Norrie (No. 28), Denis Shapovalov (No. 23) and Learner Tien (No. 26). Joao Fonseca (No. 29) has pulled out due to a back injury.

With the Australian Open main draw set to kick off on January 18, Djokovic has less than two weeks to prepare physically for the competition. The men’s singles final at Rod Laver Arena, where Djokovic last triumphed in 2023 against Stefanos Tsitsipas, is slated for February 1.

Djokovic made his second social media announcement within 24 hours on Monday. His initial statement on Sunday confirmed his departure from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA).

His statement read: “After cautious consideration, I’ve determined to step away utterly from the Professional Tennis Players Association. This choice comes after ongoing issues concerning transparency, governance, and the way in which my voice and image have been represented.

“I am proud of the vision that Vasek and I shared when founding the PTPA, giving players a stronger, independent voice – but it has become clear that my values and approach are no longer aligned with the current direction of the organisation.

“I’ll proceed to concentrate on my tennis, my household, and contributing to the game in ways in which replicate my rules and integrity.

“I wish the players and those involved the best as they move forward, but for me, this chapter is now closed.”
