Drivers have been issued a warning about petrol costs over “opportunistic profiteering”. Howard Cox, founder of HonestFuelUK, spoke after fuel prices dropped to their lowest degree since July 2021, with average unleaded falling under £1.32 per litre.
He mentioned: “FairFuelUK is delighted that pump prices are at their lowest in four and a half years. With the pound strengthening against the US Dollar, all the short-term signs are positive for drivers.”
However, Mr Cox added: “But be warned. FairFuelUK’s PumpWatch, which continues to monitor the country’s pump prices, shows that the fuel supply chain is still preventing the full extent of lower wholesale prices from being reflected at the pumps.
“Even with petrol averaging 131.9p per litre, FairFuelUK strongly believes petrol is still 6p too high at the pumps, and diesel at 141.9p per litre is 9p overpriced.
“It beggars belief that the Labour Government, like the Conservative administration before, still allow such opportunistic profiteering to run rife across the UK.”
It comes as motorists are bracing themselves for steep petrol price will increase from September 2026, with prices set to surge by an further £3 for each full tank.
The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, introduced that pump costs will rise by 1p a litre from September 1, 2026, adopted by a additional 2p per litre on December 1, 2026, and an further 2p per litre on March 1, 2027.
This means drivers filling a 60-litre tank will face an additional £3 charge.
But a new Government initiative designed to make prices more clear is set to help drivers save money.
