However, specialists say flip-flops can pose a critical security risk as a result of they aren’t securely hooked up to the foot.

Loose footwear can slip off unexpectedly, grow to be lodged beneath pedals or make it more troublesome for drivers to use stress when braking or accelerating.

Darren Miller warned that many motorists underestimate the dangers related to driving in flip-flops.

He mentioned: “Flip-flops are one of the worst types of footwear drivers can wear because they are not secure on your feet.

“They can simply slide round whereas driving, particularly during sudden braking or fast manoeuvres.”

Although there is no law specifically banning drivers from wearing flip-flops, motorists can still face penalties if police believe their choice of footwear prevented them from maintaining proper control of their vehicle.

Under the Highway Code, drivers must wear clothing and footwear that does not prevent them from using the controls correctly.

If officers believe unsuitable footwear contributed to poor driving, motorists could face a charge of careless driving.

In the most serious cases, careless driving offences can carry fines of up to £5,000, as well as penalty points on a driving licence.

Mr Miller said many drivers are unaware that seemingly harmless decisions can have legal consequences.

“A driver would possibly suppose sporting flip-flops is innocent, but when they contribute to an accident or have an effect on control of the car, it might grow to be a very costly mistake,” he said.

“Even one thing so simple as a shoe getting caught below a pedal can create a harmful scenario within seconds.”

The warning comes ahead of the busy summer travel season, with millions of motorists expected to take to the roads during upcoming school holidays and periods of warmer weather.

Drivers are being encouraged to choose footwear that allows them to comfortably operate the accelerator, brake and clutch without restriction.

Mr Miller added: “If you’re driving any distance this summer season, it’s at all times safer to put on flat, secure shoes with correct grip.

“It is a small change that could help drivers avoid fines, penalty points and potentially serious accidents.”

Motoring specialists advocate holding a appropriate pair of shoes within the car if travelling in sandals or flip-flops, significantly on longer journeys, to make sure drivers stay secure and in full control behind the wheel.
