Motorists have been told they might save “thousands” of kilos by making one very important determination ahead of April’s new car tax guidelines. Major adjustments to the Expensive Car Supplement (ECS) charge come into impact from April 1, 2026, with Rachel Reeves adjusting the tax threshold.

Under present guidelines, electric vehicles priced over £40,000 are liable to pay the extra £425 ECS charge for a period of 5 years. However, after issues that many electric fashions had been above the £40,000 mark, Reeves has determined to enhance the extent to £50,000 as ECS charges rise to £440 per 12 months.

Motorists creeping over the £50,000 stage can pay 5 tons of £440 over the subsequent half a decade, including up to £2,200 to annual charges. Car listing costs are used to calculate a vehicle’s worth, with optionally available extras counting in direction of the entire.

Matthew Briggs, CEO at Right Fuel Card defined that choosing a “lower-spec” electric car could be a essential manner to simply dodge the payment.

Matthew mentioned: “If you are opting for electric vehicles, those under £50,000 will help avoid the Expensive Car Supplement when the higher threshold comes in. Choosing lower-spec trims that don’t creep over pricing bands can save thousands over five years.”

The Government has already confirmed that the change will apply retrospectively, that means that almost all autos registered from 1 April 2025 won’t be required to pay the ECS charge. According to the Treasury, the rule change will “positively impact individuals who purchase or own an EV first registered from 1 April 2025”.

Matthew added: “From 1 April 2026, the UK Government is increasing the threshold at which the Vehicle Excise Duty expensive car supplement applies to zero-emission vehicles (EVs) from £40,000 to £50,000.

“Under the VED system, any car with a manufacturer’s list price above a certain level is liable for an extra annual charge, traditionally known as the Expensive Car Supplement on top of the standard road tax.

“This surcharge, which currently adds around £425 per year for five years after the initial registration.”
