Motorists have been informed to remove one easy car half overnight to stop a spate of thefts for one little-known element, in accordance to consultants. It is well-known that thieves can decide to steal particular elements as an alternative of a complete vehicle, with catalytic converters historically a main goal.

However, consultants at Ovoko have warned that the detachable parcel shelf positioned within the boot is now beneath risk. Parcel cabinets are the small panels which are positioned behind the rear seats, hiding the contents of a boot and sometimes offering a small platform.

According to Ovoko, vehicles throughout north London are being damaged into for thieves to steal the retractable parcel cabinets. Investigations have been opened up after a spate of incidents within the space, with crimes reported in Hampstead and Highgate, together with residential areas reminiscent of Muswell Hill, Primrose Hill and Kentish Town.

One native resident admitted to discovering their own stolen parcel shelf on eBay after trying online, whereas others have reported harm of up to £800 after thieves cracked the rear home windows to take the piece.

He added: “Remove your parcel shelf at night or when parking for extended periods. Store it in your home, because out of sight in the boot isn’t enough for experienced thieves who know exactly where they sit.

“Well-lit areas with CCTV coverage deter opportunistic theft. Thieves prefer quiet residential streets where they can work quickly without witnesses.”
