This week, the UK is being battered by sizzling climate with temperatures set to rise close to 40C in some components of the nation. In response, the Met Office has issued a sequence of amber and pink heat alerts. Furthermore, Britons are additionally being reminded to remain hydrated and look out for indicators of situations that may very well be attributable to the sizzling climate.

Some might search refuge from the heat by going into their cars and turning on the air-con. However, one motoring professional has warned drivers of some cars that even when they do have entry to their car, they shouldn’t use it this week. In a assertion on the RAC’s web site, the organisation’s highway security spokesperson Rod Dennis warned that drivers of cars without air-con ought to postpone their journeys.

Addressing the explanations for this, he defined: “Red extreme heat warnings are rare and we urge everyone to take them seriously this week. Drivers whose vehicles don’t have effective air conditioning should strongly consider postponing any non-essential car journeys until the Met Office’s weather warnings are lifted and temperatures drop.

“If this isn’t possible, our best advice is to travel during cooler times of day. This is especially important for anyone travelling with vulnerable people, including young children and older adults, who are at greater risk from the intense heat.”

The red heat warnings, due to come into place on Wednesday and Thursday this week, have been issued due to the high forecast temperatures in the south and south east of the UK.

The heat is set to be so great that some forecasters think it will break records for June. The current record for the hottest June day is 35.6C in Southampton in 1976 and in Camden Square, London, in June 1957.

The last time the UK experienced a prolonged period of temperatures as high as 40C was around four years ago in July 2022. In a statement addressing the warnings, the Met Office’s Deputy Chief Forecaster Mark Sidaway was clear that red warnings were not issued lightly and only preserved for the most extreme weather events.

He said: “Red warnings are reserved for probably the most extreme occasions and we’re anticipating extreme and important impacts from this heatwave, with health impacts possible for a lot of, even past these who are usually more susceptible to the heat.

“The last time the UK recorded temperatures this high was in July 2022, but on this occasion the heat is expected to be accompanied by high humidity.”

Meanwhile, the Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection on the United Kingdom Health Security Agency Dr Agostinho Sousa, added: “We are urging health and social care services across the country to ensure they are prepared.

“A red heat health alert indicates a risk to life for even the healthy population, but simple actions like staying hydrated, avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day, and keeping your home cool can make a big difference.”
