In a statement addressing the warnings, the Met Office’s Deputy Chief Forecaster Mark Sidaway was clear that red warnings were not issued lightly and only preserved for the most extreme weather events.

He said: “Red warnings are reserved for probably the most extreme occasions and we’re anticipating extreme and important impacts from this heatwave, with health impacts possible for a lot of, even past these who are usually more susceptible to the heat.

“The last time the UK recorded temperatures this high was in July 2022, but on this occasion the heat is expected to be accompanied by high humidity.”
