The DVLA automatically sends out a reminder form (D46P) roughly three months before a 70th birthday, but motorists can also apply online or request alternative paperwork.
Online vs postal applications
Applying online is the fastest route, with licences usually arriving within a week.
However, those who choose to renew by post may face longer waits of up to three weeks or more, particularly if medical checks are required.
Drivers who do not receive their reminder form can still renew using a D1 form, available from most Post Offices.
