Drivers throughout the UK have been issued a number plate warning forward of changes within the coming weeks. A new registration collection will probably be launched from Sunday, March 1 and motorists are urged to make sure their plate is compliant.

However, experts have warned that many drivers may be unaware that their plates fail to meet the required standards. They must meet specific rules, including a white reflective background for front plates and yellow for back.

Meanwhile, every plate fitted since September 1, 2021, must carry the British Standard number BS AU 145e. It must also include the manufacturer or supplier’s name and postcode.

The characters on a plate are not allowed to have a reflective finish. They are also not allowed to be removable, although raised 3D lettering is legal in certain conditions.

Graham Conway, managing director at Select Car Leasing, has warned that drivers caught with illegal plates will see updated penalties. As well as a hefty fine, they may receive points on their licence and the DVLA may be able to seize their vehicle.

He recommends always buying customised plates from suppliers who adhere to the official DVLA guidelines.

He added: “It’s important for drivers to grasp the nuances of what’s required for his or her licence plates, as even the smallest modifications might make it unlawful.”
