DVLA warning as thousands of drivers face £1,000 | Tech News

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has warned a large quantity of drivers may face a £1,000 penalty – as practically half a million untaxed autos are at the moment on UK roads.

It’s the obligation of the vehicle’s registered keeper to make sure it’s taxed, with penalties for driving an untaxed vehicle reaching up to £1,000. And in a new post on X, previously Twitter, DVLA has reminded motorists of this reality.

The post reads:  “You must tax your vehicle, even if you don’t have to pay anything.

“Tax it online at gov.uk/dvla/tax #TaxItDontRiskIt #DVLADigital”. Further DVLA guidance explains that some motorists may not be required to pay vehicle tax.

Exemptions might apply to specific vehicle types or to people with certain disabilities. However, even those exempt from payment must still register for tax.

If you’re uncertain about your vehicle tax due date, you can check it right here. While driving an untaxed vehicle is illegitimate, there are exceptions, such as travelling to a pre-arranged MOT take a look at, notes the RAC.

However, any detours or extreme journey distance to the take a look at centre, together with even fast stops, will invalidate this exemption.

According to Gov.uk advice the next autos could also be exempt from street tax:

  • Vehicles utilized by a disabled particular person and disabled passenger autos
  • Vehicles produced earlier than January 1, 1985
  • Mobility autos and powered wheelchairs with a most pace of 8mph and a system that limits this to 4mph on footways
  • Electric autos that source vitality from a chargepoint, an electric storage battery not related to any source of energy when the vehicle is transferring, or hydrogen fuel cells
  • Steam-powered autos
  • Mowing machines
  • Vehicles used for agriculture, horticulture and forestry
  • Vehicles with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
