“Look, it was a rough week for all of us. But at the same time, we shut them up by our performance and how we played, and we tried to – I chirped back a few times because it got to me a few times, but we tried to handle everything that came our way with class and poise, and for the most part, I felt like we did that.” Regarding the hostility aimed toward his spouse Erica, together with the thrown beer incident, McIlroy acknowledged: “It should be off-limits, but obviously it wasn’t this week.

“Erica is okay. She’s a very, very sturdy girl. You know, she dealt with all the things this week with class and poise and dignity like she all the time has.

“I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight.” The camaraderie within the European group was evident when Justin Rose commented: “I actually had no idea that Erica had a beer thrown at her yesterday, so fair play to Erica.

“She did not deliver that to the group room. We did not make that a massive deal. That’s information to me. That says a lot concerning the power of Erica and everyone on this group.”
