Carlos Alcaraz shared his respects, questioning Fabio Fognini’s decision to call it quits at season’s end: “To be trustworthy, I do not know why it is his final Wimbledon, he can nonetheless play three or 4 more years. Unbelievable.

“Playing the first match is never easy. I’ve been playing well on grass but Wimbledon is different. I tried to play the best I could but I would say I could be better. It was a great match.”

Alcaraz’s subsequent opponent is British qualifier Oliver Tarvet, the world No. 733, who defeated fellow qualifier Leandro Riedi in straight units within the first spherical.
