Lucas di Grassi guess on his profession in Formula E after his dream F1 gig got here crashing down in 2010. The 41-year-old reached F1 in 2010, racing for Virgin, after working his method up by way of karting, F3, and GP2.
However, the Sao Paulo-born racing driver struggled to make an influence, retiring 4 occasions in his first six F1 begins and a additional three later within the season. Di Grassi additionally suffered heartbreak in his hometown race, along with his end not labeled after he failed to finish 90 p.c of the race.
He didn’t rating a single F1 Championship level and posted a career-high end of 14th in Malaysia. Di Grassi was changed by Virgin on the finish of the 2010 season and changed by Jerome d’Ambrosio, leaving his motorsport profession at a difficult crossroads.
He turned the Pirelli take a look at driver in 2011 and continued till 2014, however it was in 2012 when Di Grassi took the most important gamble of his profession. Formula E promoter Alejandro Agag enlisted di Grassi’s technical enter to help develop the sequence’ electric race car. He was initially skeptical, doubting the appeal of electric racing, however modified his thoughts after studying about its broader mission to create thrilling, environmentally pleasant racing vehicles.
Di Grassi turned the primary driver to check Formula E’s prototype car and joined the all-electric open-wheeled sequence for its inaugural season in 2014. He received Formula E’s first-ever race in 2014 in Beijing, and spent 5 consecutive seasons combating for the Championship, together with his 2016/17 title win.

Di Grassi, who is taken into account one of the founding fathers and a pioneer of Formula E, is racing in his twelfth season within the sequence and has pushed the GEN1, GEN2, GEN3, and, quickly, the spectacular GEN4 car. The Brazilian instructed Express U.S. Sports that he guess his profession on Formula E — and has no regrets — because the sequence continues to form and dominate, sustainable motorsport.
“I’ve been racing professionally now for over 20 years. And of course, to have this active life, there are compromises,” Di Grassi stated at Formula E’s Paul Ricard GEN4 car launch. “So I’m a lot of time away from my family.
“I left Brazil when I was a teenager, trying to follow my dream in the UK. I passed very, very hard times on this journey. But it’s all worth it, because when you do what you love, it’s great. I love racing. As I said, in the last 14 years, I bet my career here in Formula E. It proved to be the right bet.
“So many jobs created, so many drivers with the seed. So many thousands of jobs, of suppliers, of people involved in the championship, the whole ecosystem of it. So when I’m home, I try to be with my kids as much as I can. And then, of course, when I’m racing, I try to focus as much as I can and give 100 percent every single time I’m in the race car.”

Formula E’s GEN4 car
Formula E’s new GEN4 car is set to mark a main step ahead for the sequence, with a large bounce in energy, velocity, and total efficiency. Producing over 800bhp and that includes all-wheel drive, it’s anticipated to be sooner and more aggressive than something seen within the championship thus far, with prime speeds pushing past 200mph.
Yet regardless of the added efficiency, sustainability stays central to its design, as Formula E continues to show that electric racing can ship real on-track pleasure. Di Grassi says essentially the most thrilling half about racing in Formula E is that the strides they’re making with the vehicles are no longer marginal.
“What gets me excited is that the changes are not becoming marginal changes. It’s not that the next car is slightly better than the previous one. We are looking at exponential gains, so the changes are getting bigger and bigger,” he stated.
“So I think even the next change, Gen 4 to 5, will be even a bigger step. So we are seeing a huge evolution in the technology, the series, and the fanbase. And that gets me very excited because I bet my career in Formula E 14 years ago, and it paid off to be where it is today.”

Formula E turning into F1 different
Formula E has additionally supplied a viable and aggressive different for up-and-coming racing drivers to proceed chopping their enamel, with seats in F1 and different sequence arduous to come back by. They would even be competing in opposition to a number of former F1 drivers, together with Di Grassi, Sebastien Buemi, Jean-Eric Vergne, Pascal Wehrlein, and Nyck de Vries.
“If you look at the whole professional motorsport map, there are only a few categories you can make a living out of racing. Directly, right? There are a few seats in F1, 20 in the whole world,” Di Grassi stated.
“It’s not that 20 in your country, like a football team or in your league, right? It’s 20 worldwide. Then there are 20 seats in Formula E, maybe 20 seats in WEC. And a few other places where you can actually make a living.
“So maybe if you count all the possible motorsport racing seats, there are maybe 100. And Formula E contributes to 20% of that. So it’s actually a huge chunk to have created Formula E and so many spaces for new drivers. Still not enough. Still, we’re talking about tens of thousands of kids starting go-karts, only 100 of whom actually make it into professional motorsport.

“But of course, Formula E is not at the level that Formula 1 is. Formula 1 has existed for 100 years and is by far the number one. But to be able to build a championship that creates this possibility for drivers, it’s very good.”
Di Grassi’s Lola Yamaha teammate Zane Maloney is a prime instance of simply how aggressive and arduous seats are to come back by in F1. The 22-year-old Barbadian completed fourth within the 2024 F2 standings and was an F1 take a look at driver for each Red Bull and, later, Stake F1, which is now Audi.
“My teammate [Maloney] right now is exactly this case. He was leading Formula 2. He finished, I think, in the top four in the championship. But he didn’t have a chance in F1. And he’s doing well in Formula E.
“He’s making money. He’s traveling the world. He’s doing what he loves. It’s a very difficult championship. There are hundreds of drivers who want our seats. So I can only say that, completely separated from my career, I’m very proud to actually have built a championship that we can see so many people getting the benefit of.”
