Jesse Love has backed close pal Brent Crews to do “phenomenal things” forward of his NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series debut for Joe Gibbs Racing.
Crews, 17, is making his first look of the season within the No.19 car at Circuit of the Americas this weekend. Once he turns 18 on March 30, he’ll take over the seat completely within the car.
Crews, Love and fellow prime prospect Connor Zilisch have grown up as close associates. And Love believes Crews is uniquely positioned to make a huge and instant impression in NASCAR.
“Brent’s going to do phenomenal things in the sport,” Love advised Express US Sports. “He’s a very talented young man and a really great friend of mine.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what Brent does. His career path at this point, through his development process, I don’t think there’s ever been a better development for a driver than there has been for Brent.
“With the style of cars that he’s driven, with the amount of different disciplines he’s driven in, how young he is as well, he’ll do great things.”
Asked about the principle contenders this season, defending champion Love added: “Yeah, I do think that Brent could be a contender.
“Just maybe not in the points, right? He’s going to have some peaks and valleys along the way.”
Crews can be ready for ups and downs in his debut season, however felt he made huge strides in his handful of Truck Series begins final season that stand him in good stead.
“The end of that stretch on the truck schedule, I felt like we ran really well at Martinsville and Phoenix, which is a good mixture of tracks,” he says. “Then obviously had a really strong run at the Roval.
“I haven’t run any mile and a half stuff, so we’ll see there. But I feel like on the short track stuff, having all that late model experience translated well to the Truck Series, and then all the TA2 on the road course stuff, I obviously showed great speed at the Roval.
“I think mile and a half stuff is going to be a little bit of an eye opener, working on aero stuff, side drafting, and racing in dirty air, something that will be a little new, but sprint cars also teach a lot of that. So hopefully I’ll be able to kind of put that into play, and we’ll see how it works.”
