John McEnroe’s feedback on Alexander Bublik might be coming to fruition, with the latter rounding into type in a 12 months that has seen him compete with the best within the sport, together with Jannik Sinner.

“I thought [Jack] Draper would beat him, as I didn’t know if Bublik could stick at it mentally. Today, he looked like he could beat anyone.”

McEnroe also added that he is uniquely qualified to speak on Bublik’s abilities because of his time coaching at the Laver Cup. That said, it was because of what he observed, McEnroe believed that the 28-year-old was not playing to his capabilities up to that point.

“I used to coach at the Laver Cup, and we looked at Bublik a few times because his ranking was quite high,” the legend continued. “But I was of the opinion that I wasn’t going to pick him just on that alone because it just felt unfair on those players who take the game a bit more seriously. For me, he looks like he could be in the top 15 in the world, certainly on that form.

“As ex-players, we don’t want to hear players say they’re not going to go all in on everything. Novak, Nadal, Sinner, Alcaraz, they’re like machines, but Bublik is a bit more human out there. Too often, Bublik has tanked (given up).”

After notching his fourth ATP title of the season, Bublik spoke on what that meant to him, particularly contemplating how a lot more effort he is put into his sport.

“Honestly, I always said that, you know, wins doesn’t make me go through the roof and losses doesn’t put me to the ground,” he started. “So, you know, I try to stay stable. I enjoy what I do. I’m happy that I’m able to travel, that I’m playing tournaments and I’m healthy and the win’s coming. That’s beautiful.

Speaking on Royer, Bublik added: “Obviously, you already know, I used to be finding out his matches a bit yesterday and he was close to this stage during this match and he exceeded and he is taking part in properly and, you already know, I actually, actually need to serve and do my best, you already know, to be able to win.

“I served and hit some amazing shots throughout the match and I won really by a few points. So, yeah, it’s one of the toughest finals I played in terms of, you know, nerves because, you know, I have to win this one, you know, there’s not so many finals you can play in your career but when you have a chance you have to and for me it was really, really difficult.”
