Karen Bass seems to have lied about her workplace’s function in enhancing the LA Fire Department’s after-action report on the Palisades Fire.

Last week, when it emerged that Bass’s workplace had seen the report earlier than it was revealed, the mayor denied watering it down.

“Mayor Bass has been unequivocal for months — she reviewed an early draft of the report and only asked the LAFD to make sure it was accurate on issues like weather and budget,” a spokesperson instructed The California Post.

But as The Post famous on the time, “weather and budgets are at the core of what went wrong last January.”

On Monday, our reporter, Jamie Paige, reported completely on the contents of the elusive first draft of the report — the one the mayor needed to make sure was “accurate.”

She found main, substantive edits made between the primary draft and the ultimate model:

The closing draft omits any point out of the function of the mayor’s workplace in getting ready the report.

The closing report eliminated an admission within the draft that the fire division tried to save lots of money by not “pre-deploying all available resources.” Instead, the ultimate model praised the division for “proper preparation.”

The draft mentioned that if the division had adopted its procedures for earlier climate occasions, “there would have been a recall of members for all available positions.” The closing model mentioned that the “initial response” to the fire had lacked sources, implying that firefighters on the entrance strains may need been guilty.

The draft mentioned that firefighters arriving on the scene “lacked clarity regarding the communication protocol.” The closing model shifted blame to the firefighters, saying that “most did not communicate their needs.”

The draft mentioned that 40 fire engines have been unavailable on the morning of the fire as a consequence of mechanical causes. The closing model included that data — however solely later within the doc, after saying that the fleet had been obtainable for the duty.

Other language was modified or weakened from the draft report to the ultimate model. “Failures” turned “primary challenges” and even “successes.” “Injuries” turned “minor injuries.” Even references to “wind” have been edited out.

Those aren’t edits for accuracy. They are adjustments that shift accountability away from the mayor to the fire division, and from senior officers to rank-and-file firefighters.

The mayor should clarify why she apparently lied to the media and the public about the character of the edits.

This is no longer a story about a natural catastrophe, or climate change. It is no longer the tragedy of one or two neighborhoods. It is no longer simply a story about poor management and preparation.

Now, it’s a story about honesty, integrity, and accountability.

The mayor ignored calls to resign after the Palisades Fire, although she selected to go away the nation earlier than the high winds arrived final January 7.

Today, she is operating for re-election.

She is asking the public to trust her, again. Voters should ask themselves whether or not Karen Bass has earned that trust.
