Kyle Busch lears fate as NASCAR issues penalty – Sports News
NASCAR has determined to not penalize Kyle Busch after he wrecked John Hunter Nemechek at Texas Motor Speedway, however Ryan Preece has not been as lucky after his conflict with Ty Gibbs.
Two controversial wrecks occurred during Sunday’s Cup Series race at Texas, as Busch slammed into Nemechek and Preece shunted Gibbs into the wall. NASCAR confronted calls to droop Busch, however the group determined in opposition to doing so after a review.
Forde appeared on the Hauler Talk podcast to debate the punishments handed out by NASCAR and mentioned that SMT knowledge led them to consider that Busch’s wreck might not have been intentional. “The SMT data is largely what played a role for us in this decision,” Forde mentioned.
“(NASCAR vice president of competition) Elton Sawyer said the data told us that after the incident, (Busch) was turning the wheel all the way left just to go straight. So we had a feeling that he had some pretty significant damage.
“And it was inconclusive on if that was a broken vehicle that triggered (Busch) to get into (Nemechek), or if it was intentional. There have been zero issues that, in our opinion, mentioned he did this deliberately, and it rose to the extent of penalty. So that’s why we landed on no penalty.”
However, Preece was upset with Gibbs several laps before he wrecked the young NASCAR driver, forcing him to retire from the race. An aggressive move by Gibbs angered Preece, who appeared to threaten that something could occur when he next catches up to him.
“He is so fortunate his car is so [expletive] fast. … All proper, once I get to that 54, I’m achieved with him. [Expletive] fool. That car is so [expletive] fast, [expletive] me off. Stupid,” Preece said over the radio.
“I’m gonna vent for 15 seconds. I can’t stand when idiots like him have fast race automobiles that they’ll do silly [expletive] and get away with it. End of rant.”
Preece’s rant went viral, and he later doubled down by stating that “there are repercussions” for decisions made on the race track. Although Preece admitted he “hated” that Gibbs wrecked during the incident, Forde confirmed that the audio played a role in NASCAR’s punishment.
“We do have a look at all accessible assets, whether or not that’s the video, in-car audio, SMT knowledge,” Forde said. “And actually what this got here down to is … (Preece) mentioned what he mentioned, after which he did what he mentioned. And so in our view, it was deliberately wrecking one other vehicle.
“He said what he said, and then he did what he said. So in our view, it was intentionally wrecking another vehicle. … He can appeal.”
