The LA Unified School District (LAUSD) has been in hassle for a long time, regardless of the complacency of its management. But Alberto Carvalho, we have been instructed, could be totally different — skilled, accountable, dependable.

How flawed that was.

Carvalho resigned in late June, following an FBI raid in February that was apparently half of a fraud and corruption investigation into a botched artificial intelligence (AI) contract.

Now a secret letter reveals that the board had accused Carvalho of utilizing district assets for his own personal benefit. It additionally accused him of accepting unreported presents searching for outdoors income, regardless of his hefty $440,000 wage.

The letter got here after the raid and two weeks earlier than the resignation.

The board may need been on the lookout for excuses to get rid of Carvalho, who had been on paid depart, hiding out at home for months till The California Post noticed him.

The draw back: Now the board has no one left in charge for its mistakes.

Four days after they despatched their letter to Carvalho, each board member acquired an ominous letter from the LA County Office of Education.

The letter warned them that in the event that they authorized the large pay raise unions had demanded earlier within the 12 months, the district would face “severe” financial issues.

But LAUSD authorized the pay hikes anyway. And as for Carvalho — nicely, he didn’t need one more reason to go away.

Carvalho has his own battles to battle. He left a mess behind — however the LAUSD board can’t blame him anymore. They own it, after approving that pay raise.

The district is now solely days away from a 45-day deadline to submit a revised finances by Friday. If it fails, the county has the ability to take control of the district’s funds.

It is a large embarrassment for the LAUSD board and its members.

In June, when LAUSD authorized the pay hikes, it issued a press release by which board members fell throughout themselves to take credit for the choice.

It’s simpler to win applause from unions than to steadiness the finances.

Board president Scott M. Schmerelson crowed: “Our commitment to our labor partners remains constant.” At least he admitted that the district was “facing financial challenges.”

Other board members, like Tanya Ortiz Franklin, didn’t hassle. She mentioned that the raises would help workers who have been “struggling to make ends meet.”

How concerning the district making its own ends meet, for a change?
