Local backlash is derailing Albany’s clean-energy – Latest News
New York’s headlong push for an all-renewable electric grid is operating out of fuel.
Or, to be more correct, it’s colliding with New Yorkers who refuse to permit their farms, forests and neighborhoods to be paved with oceans of photo voltaic panels and planted with forests of 600-foot-high wind generators.
A new report commissioned by the New York Affordable Clean Power Alliance, which represents photo voltaic power, wind power and impartial energy producers, concludes that the Empire State’s electric grid faces “hurdles in maintaining reliability” due largely to its failure to fulfill “ambitious renewables targets.”
The state has “fallen short” of these eco-friendly objectives as a result of of such “challenges” as “local opposition” and “lack of transmission capacity.”
Local opposition? You don’t say.
You received’t hear a lot about it in legacy media shops, however New York has been an epicenter of the backlash in opposition to Big Solar and Big Wind for twenty years.
As early as 2007, the Catskills cities of Meredith and Bovina handed an ordinance banning wind tasks after residents expressed issues “about views, health, safety, noise, and property values.”
I created the Renewable Rejection Database to trace the backlash in opposition to different power. Since 2015, New York cities and counties have logged at the very least 78 rejections or restrictions of wind and photo voltaic tasks.
That means close to 10% of the database’s 793 rejections have occurred within the Empire State. Only Ohio has recorded more.

As Anne Reynolds, then the chief director of the Alliance for Clean Energy New York, admitted in 2018, “I personally think the arguments against wind energy are because people don’t want to see the turbines.”
New York’s climate plan, signed into law in 2019 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was by no means more than a hopium-filled want checklist.
It requires the state to acquire 70% of its electrical energy from renewables by 2030 and 100% zero-carbon-emission electrical energy by 2040.
Achieving that, the plan says, would require “aggressive deployment of existing renewable energy” and batteries.
How aggressive? Very.
New York now has about 2,600 megawatts of wind-generation capability. But it has solely added about 1,000 megawatts of new wind technology since 2012.
The state additionally has about 6,000 megawatts of photo voltaic capability — not almost enough juice to fulfill demand during the recent summer time months, when peak hundreds exceed 33,000 megawatts statewide.

But not even that bureaucratic energy play can clear up New York’s looming electrical energy disaster.
According to the NYACPA report, the New York City space will “experience a generation shortfall starting in 2033, driven by an increase in peak demand and the planned retirement of existing dispatchable generation.”
Read: NYC will likely be plagued with blackouts and brown-outs within the close to future.
In addition to the likelihood of electrical energy shortages, New York shoppers are being hammered by price will increase due to the state’s renewable mandates.
In February, ConEd proposed a charge increase that will increase the price of an average fuel and electrical energy invoice by $154 per 30 days.
Those will increase will add additional ache to New Yorkers, who now pay about 24.4 cents per kilowatt-hour for his or her electrical energy — almost 48% more than the US average.
More price will increase are coming. The state’s climate plan hinges on a huge increase in offshore wind power, among the many costliest methods of producing energy.
Ratepayers may even be on the hook for some $26 billion value of high-voltage transmission tasks needed to accommodate more wind and photo voltaic.
The punchline right here is apparent: New Yorkers have been duped.
For years, climate teams and their myriad Albany allies have claimed that the state can run solely on different power, if solely it had the political will.
But now even the photo voltaic and wind jihadis are being pressured to confess that their plans are being short-circuited by rural and neighborhood opposition to wind tasks, photo voltaic tasks and most lately, to lithium-ion battery storage websites, too.
Speaking of rejections, right here’s the newest: In February, the Town Board in Dunkirk voted 3 to 1 to reject a 3.75 megawatt photo voltaic project.
Town Supervisor Priscilla Penfold, who voted in opposition to, stated it will diminish “the agricultural nature of the town.”
That rejection received’t be the final.
