Max Verstappen accused of ‘whinging’ over – Sports News
Six-time Grand Prix winner Riccardo Patrese has dismissed Max Verstappen’s claims of ‘passport bias’ in F1, suggesting the champion is simply ‘whinging’. Verstappen has vocalized his sentiment that he is unfairly scrutinized by British media.
The 27-year old-driver’s gripes have been regularly mentioned during his 2021 championship tussle with Lewis Hamilton, and the difficulty reemerged as he constantly battled McLaren’s Lando Norris.
“Sometimes in racing situations, or battles, or certain penalties, and the way people look at success and how much credit they give you or not, I definitely feel that there is a bias,” declared Verstappen following his victory finally 12 months’s Brazilian Grand Prix.
“The problem in F1 is that 80 to 85 per cent of the media is British. And I did feel that some things which were written about me were not fair. I am not going to sit here and single out one broadcaster, but I just had to laugh about what was said. I was like: ‘Whatever.'”.
Despite Verstappen’s complaints, former Williams and Benetton driver Patrese believes there’s no substance to them. Speaking to Listofsweepstakescasinos.com, Patrese refuted, “I don’t agree with him,” asserting that criticism isn’t as a consequence of nationality.
“[He is not criticized] because of his passport. If [James Hunt was] Dutch, I don’t think he gave any trouble during his career. I think the fact [is] that he’s special and opens the right doors at the right moment, and he could use all the opportunities he could have.
“Sometimes with these guidelines, he would not agree, however I do not suppose it is as a result of he is Dutch as a substitute of English. Champions normally like whinging a little bit. I do know very effectively it is as a result of I had Nigel [Mansell] within the group that he was winging all of the time!”.
Despite Patrese’s doubts, Verstappen has the full backing of his team when it comes to his media approach. Red Bull even boycotted Sky Sports F1 interviews at the 2022 Mexican Grand Prix after Ted Kravitz suggested Hamilton was “robbed” of the 2021 title, and the four-time world champion has shown a short temper when his driving standards have been questioned in 2025.
Verstappen also has the support of former Red Bull aerodynamics expert, Adrian Newey. “I believe from the surface, I’m not sure people totally recognize and perceive Max, identical to they did not with Sebastian [Vettel],” he said on the High Performance podcast.

“First of all, there’s this type of demonisation each of them suffered at occasions, which I believe could be very unfair, and perhaps that is additionally a little bit of the British media, if I’m trustworthy.
“Sky have a huge influence around the world, their viewing is truly international, but their coverage is quite nationalistic, dare I say, and that can have an influence. It’s this thing that now with journalism, typically, there is that trend to sort of either put people on a pedestal or knock them down.”
