It appears, however, that his struggles off the tee are beginning to wear on him. “I’m simply not driving the ball properly enough. It’s been a downside all 12 months for probably the most half,” he said.
“Yeah, I’ve kind of obtained, like I miss it proper, after which I need to strive to appropriate it. And then I’ll overdo it, and I’ll miss it left. It’s a little bit of back and forth that means. So that is fairly irritating, particularly when like I pleasure myself on driving the ball properly.
“I just need to try to figure it out. I honestly thought I’d figured it out. Coming in here, I hit it well on Sunday at Quail Hollow, and then hit it good at home on Monday. Then even — obviously I had to curtail the practice round Tuesday, but hit it decent yesterday.
“Just kind of, as soon as I get beneath the gun, it simply looks as if it begins to go a little bit wayward on me.”
When questioned about whether the blister on his toe affected his play, McIlroy responded curtly, “No.”
