Naomi Osaka issues publica apology after crashing – Sports News
Naomi Osaka has extended an apology to her fans following a surprising defeat by world No. 53 Camila Osorio in the opening round of Indian Wells.
The former 2018 champion struggled throughout the match, ultimately losing with scores of 6-4, 6-4. Making her return to tennis after retiring from the Australian Open third-round due to an injury, Osaka was favored to win against Osorio but was outplayed, marking the first time a Colombian has triumphed over a past world No. 1.
Post-match, Osaka expressed her disappointment on Threads, stating: “Worst match I’ve ever played in my life. Wow, I’m so sorry to everyone who watched that.”
Despite the setback, she offered a more optimistic outlook during her post-match press conference, acknowledging some difficulties but considering it a minor hiccup: “There were certain things that felt extremely off because I could only start to practise serving after a certain amount of time. I think given the situation, it wasn’t that terrible. It just feels like a little bump in the road.”
Osorio, set to play Danish talent Clara Tauson next, shared her excitement in an on-court interview about her win: “First, good evening everyone, I’m Camila Osorio. It’s crazy for me, it’s a dream come true. I really wanted to play on this court. I was really excited and looking forward to playing a champion like Naomi, so I can’t believe I won. I was just trying to give a good show and was enjoying playing one point at a time.”

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, first grabbed the spotlight with her victory at the 2018 US Open, following up with a triumph at the Australian Open four months later. She secured consecutive titles both in New York and Melbourne once again two years after.
The Japanese sensation has faced some challenges on the court since then, grappling with injuries and taking a hiatus in 2023 to welcome her daughter into the world. Osaka made her comeback at the beginning of 2024 and, despite not making it past the second round of a Grand Slam last season, is looking to reclaim her peak performance as the 2025 season unfolds.
