NASCAR driver out of Daytona 500 moments after – Sports News
Anthony Alfredo was in tears after qualifying for the Daytona 500 – solely to be kicked out of the race with no proper to appeal simply hours later.
Alfredo thought he had booked his spot in ‘The Great American Race’ by ending forward of BJ McLeod and JJ Yeley within the second Duel at Daytona.
He was emotional in his TV interview with FOX Sports as he soaked up the magnitude of his achievement after failing to qualify final 12 months.
But catastrophe quickly struck as his No.62 Chevrolet failed technical inspection, which means his end was disallowed.
Cup Series director Brad Moran defined: “First of all, very unfortunate to be here. Any small open team, we don’t like to have these problems but we do have to do our job, make sure there’s parity among the field and also parity amongst people trying to make the 500.
“During inspection, we noticed this hose, which is a transaxle cooling hose. It comes off the right side quarter window and it’s supposed to go into the transaxle cooler. It needs to be air tight, needs to be fastened. We have many rules, as you all know, that no parts can fall off the car for obvious reasons.
“We don’t say what the intent is, but these parts have to be fastened properly and unfortunately this one piece wasn’t, on the right side, and there was also another hose disconnected for driver cooling.”
The Duel was classed as qualifying moderately than a race, which means it was not a straight disqualification, and as a substitute was his end being disallowed, which means the staff was not capable of appeal the choice.
It meant McLeod’s car went by technical inspection and, after his No.78 car handed, he certified for his first Daytona 500 since 2023 after lacking out the final two years.
Before failing technical inspection, Alfredo had declared: “It’s really cool (tearing up). My career has had a lot of ups and downs. You never know when you’re going to get another shot to race on any Sunday, especially the Daytona 500, The Great American Race.
“I have all my family here. My baby girl, Everleigh. I think I’ve only been this choked up twice in my life, when she was born, and (indiscernible) for the Daytona 500.
“It wouldn’t be possible without Beard Motorsports, a tremendous family. Women-owned NASCAR Cup Series team with a dream, carrying along Mark Beard Sr.’s legacy.
“And Dude Wipes. I wouldn’t be in my career without them. They’ve been my flagship partner in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. To come here and make the Daytona 500 together is a dream come true.
“I mean, missing it last year has haunted me until this very moment. This is the only thing that could blow that black cloud over.”
