One group of UK motorists faces “fewer options” when a major new rule change comes into effect in a matter of days. New DVSA driving test rules come into effect from June 9, with learner drivers set to be given new rules around booking a test.

The DVSA has already issued a series of changes this spring, with driving instructors already banned from booking tests for their students. The final update means learner drivers can only change their test to one of the three nearest assessment centres. The new updates are being put into place to limit the number of ways scammers and third parties can resell tests.

Matt Crole-Rees, motoring expert at Confused.com, explained that although the new rules would stop some of this, it will also complicate matters for learners desperate to get behind the wheel.

Matt said: “Restricting where tests can be moved should make it harder for fraudulent behaviour to occur. In the long run, measures like these could help ensure test slots are being used by genuine learners rather than being treated as a commodity to buy and sell for profit.

“However, it does mean learners will have fewer options if they’re looking to switch test centres based on availability or performance.

“Our research shows that driving test pass rates can vary significantly across the country, ranging from around 33% to 80%, so where you take your test can make a real difference.”

The DVSA has confirmed that motorists who e-book a new take a look at from June 9 will solely be capable of transfer a take a look at to any of the three centres nearest to the place their take a look at is booked, or the take a look at centre they first booked at.

Matt added: “With the reserving course of turning into more structured, it is important that learners take time to decide on the best take a look at centre and solely e-book after they’re assured they’re prepared.

“Understanding native go charges and ready instances beforehand can help learners make a more knowledgeable resolution and provides themselves the best probability of success.”
