The chaos on the LA police commission hearings is an element of the “progressive” motion’s attempt to destroy police — which is why I left the Democratic Party.

On Jan. 22, Newsweek revealed an opinion piece by LA Mayor Karen Bass. The headline was catchy — and amusing: “Democrats must stand strong and lead on public safety.”

Karen Bass has spent her profession bashing law enforcement, defunding it, after which claiming ignorance about why younger women and men have no want to affix the ranks of the LAPD.

We need police. The crack epidemic of the late Nineteen Eighties and early Nineteen Nineties was accompanied by a huge surge in gang violence. It was not a mistake to lock up hard-core gang members utilizing California’s then-newly-enacted three strikes law.

Removing them from the streets introduced down the extent of violence and saved numerous lives — lives the left won’t ever acknowledge had been saved.

The progressive worldview is that imposing the law is inherently dangerous to communities of colour, if not outright a racist act of oppression by the descendants of slave catchers.

In their minds, each effort to scale back the presence of law enforcement within the public sq. makes the imaginary victims of oppression safer.

The unhappy actuality is that legal avenue gangs are each the precise oppressors in marginalized communities, and the prime beneficiaries of a lowered police presence on the streets.

Democrats have zero proof that something they’ve proposed works to improve public security.  They are claiming credit for a drop in crime that coincided with President Donald Trump coming to workplace and taking a more durable method.

Criminals are bolder, higher armed, and more keen to interact in violent conduct after they know that police usually are not there to catch them within the act.

Who would have thought, previous to the George Floyd riots of 2020, that subtle gangs would raid jewellery shops in broad daylight, break in with autos, after which smash and grab the whole lot within the show instances, proper in entrance of frightened workers and clients?

Burglary tourism? Check. Home invasion robberies? Pick any zip code and they’re occurring there. Open-air drug markets, replete with addicts bent over like zombies worshipping the ground, are present in any massive homeless encampment in Los Angeles.

Street takeovers, adopted by the ever-present looting of comfort shops, no longer even make the night information. But Bass and LA Country Sheriff Robert Luna declare we’re safer.

Bass is attempting to create a false image of public security by renaming it “community safety,” as if a title change will make anybody safer. City-funded packages with fancy names, long on advantage signaling however preciously short on outcomes, abound in Bass’ gaslighting op-ed.

Between the town and the county, we’ve the Office of Community Safety; the Gang Reduction and Youth Development initiative; the Retail Theft Task Force; Care First, Jail Last; the Justice, Care, and Opportunities Department; the Department of Youth Development; and my favourite, the Community Safety Implementation Team, previously generally known as the Jail Closure Implementation Team.

Yes, these people have deluded themselves into believing that closing the 4,500-inmate Men’s Central Jail, with out a substitute, will make us all safer.

The progressive crowd has set its sights on persevering with to defund law enforcement, then taking LAPD and LA County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) funds for themselves.

They have rebranded their marketing campaign as “reimagining public safety,” or “reinvesting in the community,” but it surely’s nonetheless the identical defunding fad.

The radical components of the progressive motion, emboldened by confrontations with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), have now taken control of the town’s police commission hearings and even attacked a California Post reporter, Jamie Paige.

Members of this activist mob, curiously liable to concealing their identities whereas demanding the unmasking of law enforcement, consider that shouting down those that disagree with them or help the police is an train in preserving democracy.

The similar ways might be discovered at LA County’s civilian oversight commission.  In each boards, ostensibly created to deal with police misconduct, the commissioners seldom obtain enter from the public. Instead, hearings are dominated by those that scream the loudest.

The commissioners themselves are a who’s-who of the far left, with hefty political connections.

No, Karen Bass — your get together won’t ever be related to public security. Quite the alternative: You’ve cornered the market on fanning the flames of outrage for no matter trigger du jour serves your narrative.

Alex Villanueva is the previous Sheriff of Los Angeles County. He is operating for the workplace again in 2026 — as a Republican.
