Rachel Reeves has been advised that her controversial pay-per-mile car tax charge will trigger knock-on points for up to 5 years. The Chancellor has already confirmed that a 3p pay-per-mile street tax charge will come into impact for electric vehicles from 2028, with hybrid autos charged 1.5p per mile.

Polls counsel the new price is set to be controversial, with a YouGov ballot suggesting that 43% of respondents consider the price was the flawed factor to do at this time.

Experts within the motoring industry have warned the information may have an effect on the UK’s electric car transition, a double blow for industry which has to satisfy strict EV targets via the Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate guidelines.

It’s a concern shared by Paul Barker, editor of Auto Express, who has warned the new price may see prospects push back an electric car buy for up to 5 years, even when he suggests a new price was needed to offset the loss of fuel responsibility income.

Speaking solely to Express.co.uk, Paul stated: “Most people recognise that you can’t simply absorb the large drop in fuel duty over the coming years. However, the Government’s messaging has been poor and has created uncertainty, which risks delaying EV uptake as some buyers may postpone switching for another car cycle, typically 3–5 years.

“The point that EVs will still be significantly cheaper to run — particularly with home charging — was largely lost in the noise around the £300 annual figure. The reality is that the shortfall in fuel duty revenue will need to be replaced, and EVs were never going to avoid additional costs indefinitely.”

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has beforehand claimed that the new pay-per-mile price would “likely reduce demand for electric cars”.

They accepted that the Government’s £1.3billion of further funding across the plug-in grant would create an further 320,000 gross sales, however this is able to nonetheless depart a internet loss.
