Ryan Blaney issued a heartfelt apology to Team Penske after the No. 12 Ford driver suffered one more engine failure.
On lap 208 of the scheduled 267 laps in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, a giant plume of smoke started pouring out from below Blaney’s car. The 31-year-old managed to navigate to pit highway, the place he exited his vehicle and settled for a thirty sixth place end.
Prior to his engine exploding, Blaney – who’s but to win a race this season – led a race-high 124 laps and was actively operating third when the incident transpired. He did little to cover his frustration after the underbelly of his No. 12 Ford burst into flames, shouting over the radio: “I’m ——- blowing up! You have got to be ——- me. Oh my God, sorry fellas. It’ll go our way eventually, I hope. Appreciate the fast car.”
Speaking to FOX Sports pit reporter Jamie Little, Blaney revealed that the car malfunction caught him completely by surprise. “I didn’t have any warning,” he said. “It just laid over when I got back to wide-open down the front and that was all she wrote.
“It just stinks. We had a really fast Dent Wizard Ford Mustang. We led a lot of laps. We lost a little bit of track position there with some stuff on pit road, but got back to third and it was a great race between me and Bubba (Wallace) and (Kyle) Larson. I’m sure Denny (Hamlin) was gonna get back into it. It was gonna be a heck of a battle the last 60 laps or so, but it just didn’t really work out for us. We’ll continue to keep fighting.”
Despite suffering a premature end in Sunday’s Straight Talk Wireless 400, Blaney asserted that he and his team still have much to be proud of. “I appreciate the 12 guys for just giving me a hot rod. It was an incredibly, incredibly fast race car today,” Blaney added. “We’ll keep our heads up. It’s just one of those things where it’s not really going our way right now, but the good news is we’re bringing fast cars and that’s all you can ask for. We’ll keep on moving.”
This is hardly the first time that engine issues have derailed a strong race for Blaney. According to Racing Reference, he’s recorded seven DNF’s due to engine failure over his decorated Cup Series career.

Back in 2015, Blaney amassed a whopping four DNF’s as a result of engine failure/issues while representing Wood Brothers Racing for a part-time schedule. After sustaining one more in 2018, he went six full seasons without another engine failure DNF before suffering two this year.
To make matters worse, Blaney has now failed to finish in three consecutive races following a crash at Las Vegas, in addition to engine failures at Phoenix and Homestead-Miami.
