“We have extensive experience in all-wheel drive in combustion vehicles. This was transferred into electrification where the solutions are different, but the same philosophy which is trying to maximise the control of the vehicles in any sort of conditions and terrain. Nissan is one of the leaders in all-wheel drive technology in the car business so we really wanted to have the possibility to transfer our expertise to Formula E as well.”

“The way an electric powertrain works in normal cars is the same as Formula E, and the control systems are more or less the same engineering challenges, it’s just the car is designed to go fast which is a different objective compared to road cars.”
Porsche has been one of the most successful teams in Formula E, picking up two Drivers’ titles and one Teams crown since they joined the championship in 2019. The manufacturer has also taken advantage of the road car benefits on offer, with the latest cars on UK and European roads now adopting some serious race-ready tech.
The newest Porsche Taycan Turbo GT comes with a particular “Attack Mode’ tool, delivering an additional 120 kW over 10 seconds, similar to the software teams actually use in the race. Porsche has also perfected their direct oil cooling feature from the start of their Formula E project.
The feature uses a specially developed liquid to cool the electric drive system which significantly improves efficiency. The tech is now fitted on the latest Cayenne Electric.
Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E at Porsche stressed the crossovers don’t end there with battery recuperation also vital. Regenerative braking converts kinetic energy back into electrical energy instead of wasting it as heat, increasing the range of the vehicle.

He told Express.co.uk: “You look at recuperation power. The Gen 3 (Formula E car) is recuperating at an energy level of 600kW and last November, the Taycan Turbo GT was the car with the highest recuperation power 400k.
“Since November, we have announced the Cayenne electric with 600kW recuperation power. It shows how quickly the road cars are following the parameters of the motorsport cars.”
Florian explained that to take advantage of all the learnings on offer, Porsche Motorsport has “daily fruitful discussions” with guys from the road car department.
Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E stressed that road car relevance continued to be very important for the series going forward.
He advised Express.co.uk: “We’re a laboratory. We are a test lab. This track here is a test bed for manufacturers to test their technology.”
