There have been some really wonderful roads constructed over the years, however none are believed to be as expensive as the one being constructed on a French tropical island. Early estimates show it may value round £233million per mile.

The island of Réunion sits hundreds of miles from mainland France in the Indian Ocean, but it’s nonetheless absolutely half of France and the European Union. It makes use of the euro, has French legal guidelines and is handled the similar as every other French area regardless of its distant location. For many years, drivers on Réunion needed to depend on a coastal road that ran instantly beneath steep cliffs.

Rockfalls, landslides and violent storms repeatedly pressured it to close, creating long delays and harmful circumstances.

After years of issues, officers determined the island needed a safer and more dependable route.

That determination led to the creation of the project now generally known as the Nouvelle Route du Littoral, or New Coastal Road.

Early estimates put the value at round €2billion (£1.75billion) for simply 12.5km (7.5 miles) of road. That works out at roughly £233million per mile.

There are some projections which recommend that the ultimate value could rise even additional to €2.5billion (£2.2billion) by the time the project is accomplished.

The price is so high as a result of massive components of the road are being constructed out in the ocean. Instead of hugging the shoreline, the new route sits on big viaducts and causeways designed to resist waves, storms and powerful cyclones.

This requires deep foundations, specialist marine engineering and enormous quantities of rock, which has been troublesome to source on the island.

Construction started round 2013-2014, following earlier research that began in the Nineties.

The purpose is to create a new hyperlink between Saint-Denis and La Possession, two of the busiest areas on the island.

The outdated road is repeatedly disrupted, so the new one is seen as a long-term repair for security and visitors issues.

The project remains to be not completed. A serious 8.7km (5.4 miles) viaduct part opened between 2022 and 2023 for restricted one-way visitors.

But the remaining sections are nonetheless below construction after years of delays. New phases are anticipated to start in 2026, with full completion doubtless round 2030.

The work is being carried out by a consortium that features main French construction companies resembling Vinci Construction and Bouygues Travaux Publics.

The funding comes from the French Government, the regional council of Réunion and the European Union.

Réunion is home to round 860,000 people.
