A technical glitch with National Highways’ cameras could result in hundreds more dashing convictions being overturned, because the government-owned company extends its investigation back to 2019. The Department for Transport (DfT) revealed that that is when an “upgrade” of variable pace restrict cameras started.

Previously, the division had introduced motion can be taken concerning 2,650 “erroneous camera activations” recognized by National Highways since 2021. The malfunction brought about a delay between cameras and digital pace restrict indicators, leading to some motorists being wrongly accused of dashing after the restrict had already been lowered.

The DfT assured final month that these affected can be “contacted directly by the relevant police force”, resulting in them being “reimbursed” and having “points removed from their licence where relevant”. This subject led to the cancellation of pace awareness programs for tens of hundreds of people by police forces.

Earlier this week, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander declared that Tracey Westall, a non-executive director of the DfT, will spearhead an unbiased review into the incident.

Transport minister Lord Hendy steered on Wednesday that drivers wrongfully penalised for dashing is perhaps eligible for compensation if they will display they incurred losses similar to elevated insurance coverage premiums due to the erro.
