Tommy Paul lately make clear the “sore subject” that he jokingly conceded has precipitated points between him and fiancee Paige Lorenze.

Last month, Paul and Lorenze publicly introduced their engagement shortly after his upset second-round loss at Wimbledon. The American tennis star pulled out all of the stops for the picturesque proposal in Nantucket, which occurred whereas he was sidelined from motion with a foot damage.

“I wanted to do it on the beach. But the schedule for the weather was horrible, it was supposed to rain the whole time, so I ended up renting a little cottage and did it there,” Paul informed reporters on the Cincinnati Open earlier this month.

“Nobody was around, it was just me and her and I thought it was great to have that moment for ourselves.”

Lorenze and Paul first started dating back in 2022 once their paths crossed at the US Open. Given their demanding schedules as a skilled athlete and influencer/entrepreneur, nevertheless, Paul was pressured to attend for a good second to pop the query.

“I knew I was going to do it for a while, but I didn’t know when,” he defined. “Obviously I was out for a little bit, so it was kind of a forced vacation and I was like, ‘This is probably the best time for me to do it.’ It was great because it was her family vacation. I didn’t want to take over her family vacation with that, but I guess I kind of did. But it was great.”

Since becoming an item, Lorenze has taken a large interest in her partner’s sport — though Paul admitted that it’s become a touchy subject in their household. “I’m going to get in trouble for this because I always tell her that I’ll go out and play tennis with her,” he told PEOPLE back in April. “And then I always get lazy when it’s my time to wind down and I never end up going out with her on the court.”

On the rare occasion the couple have been able to play together, Paul revealed that he’s been impressed with Lorenze’s performance. “I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty impressed,” he said. “She plays pretty good, she has the strokes down. She knows what she’s doing on the court.”

Paul will hope to turn in an inspiring showing of his own on home soil at this year’s US Open. In the leadup to his first-round matchup against Elmer Moller, the World No. 14 noted that he’s worked on improving several areas of his game.

“I still think I need a lot of work on my serve,” Paul started. “My serve can improve a lot. I think I’m making a lot of the right decisions on the court, but I think my execution isn’t great right now, especially in the past month or so. I feel like I haven’t had much time to really sharpen those tools on the court.

“That’s a lot of what I’m working on leading into the Open. Playing, attacking tennis, volleying, while volleying smart. Because you can hit a good volley, but get in the wrong place. It doesn’t matter. You’re going to lose the point. Everyone can pass so well, everyone can play so well. I’d say serve and first volleys are huge for me.”
