The left is screaming that President Donald Trump’s order Thursday to begin dismantling the federal Department of Education spells the top of civilization as we all know it — at the very least.
Truth is, it’s a healthy begin to bettering US schooling by giving mother and father, states and native leaders more control over their colleges and boosting competitors.
The DOE has been little more than a present to teachers unions and the left ever since President Jimmy Carter pushed its creation in a sleazy quid professional quo for the National Education Association’s endorsement within the 1976 presidential race.
It was by no means meant to benefit youngsters.
Nor did it: Not one shred of proof signifies the company’s creation has led to higher pupil achievement.

Heck, the truth that American Federation of Teachers boss Randi Weingarten has been throughout TV screens blasting Trump’s transfer is irrefutable proof he’s heading in the right direction.
The president acknowledged he can’t unilaterally abolish the division; that requires congressional motion.
Nor can he scrap packages Congress has mandated.
But it’s good to see him beginning the method of dismantling this worse-than-useless paperwork: DOE head Linda McMahon can now slender the company’s jurisdiction, trim its 4,400-strong workforce and work to shift packages to different departments, if she will’t remove them altogether.
That means no more federal calls for for colleges to undertake corrosive DEI agendas.
No more muscling colleges to let boys in ladies’ locker rooms or to set up school kangaroo courts to punish males merely accused of sexual misconduct.
It’s a historic first step in shrinking the federal authorities — a badly needed transfer to save lots of taxpayers money that presidents not often even take into account, not to mention act on.
Most important, it will get the ball rolling so Congress can help Trump scale back the feds’ function in schooling and give mother and father more alternative past public-school monopolies largely managed by teachers unions.
That means more constitution colleges, vouchers, homeschooling, and so on.
It means hope for tomorrow’s youngsters.
Trump is looking out for taxpayers and — in contrast to unions and lefties — for youngsters.
