UCLA has been beneath scrutiny for permitting antisemitism to run rampant on campus.

Now the college’s medical faculty is being sued for racial discrimination in admissions.

But state law has already banned the use of race in admissions for 30 years — and UCLA allegedly ignored it.

Voters handed Proposition 209 in 1996, and defeated a repeal effort by voting down Proposition 16 in 2020.

That’s proper: the identical voters who selected Joe Biden overwhelmingly in opposition to Donald Trump additionally stored the state’s ban on affirmative motion in place.

But universities evidently assume they know higher.

And the allegations in opposition to UCLA go back a long method.

Nearly 20 years in the past, then-UCLA professor Tom Groseclose accused UCLA of sneaking in racial standards, particularly by encouraging college students to debate race in admissions essays.

AP

He wrote in a report that he launched in 2008:

“A growing body of evidence strongly suggests that UCLA is cheating on admissions. Specifically, applicants often reveal their own race on the essay part of their application. This allows admissions staff members to learn the race of applicants; then, in violation of Proposition 209, readers use such information to evaluate applicants. To the extent that this happens-an extent which can only be assessed with systematic data on admissions-such practices are de facto implementations of racial preferences.”

Groseclose, a statistics professional, requested UCLA for knowledge on a random pattern of 1,000 candidates in order that he may see for himself whether or not the college was violating Proposition 209.

The college refused to present him the information. He resigned from an admissions oversight committee in protest.

If the criticism in opposition to UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine is taken at face worth, nothing has modified.

If something, the college administration had turn out to be even more dedicated to DEI because the Black Lives Matter motion.

Until Trump.

Now, UCLA’s sample of discrimination — in favor of DEI candidates, and in opposition to Jewish college students — is beneath scrutiny.

Gavin Newsom has defended UCLA within the antisemitism instances. The governor has angrily claimed that the Trump administration is attempting to destroy “academic freedom” — a freedom that solely applies to the left.

Will he say the identical now?

The plaintiffs embody Students for Fair Admissions, which prevailed in opposition to Harvard.

That’s a signal that this isn’t a frivolous case, or some variety of political energy grab.

Newsom has toyed with proposals for “reparations” for slavery, and signed an official apology by the state for previous racism.

The irony is that racism could persist in California — on campus, among the many governor’s political allies within the tutorial world.

There is no excuse for racial discrimination — particularly at a medical faculty, whose graduates will go on to make life-and-death selections.

The governor ought to urge UCLA to settle the case — and to reform its admissions insurance policies.
