If I were buying privately, I would only do so with a full history check and independent inspection, because serious repair bills can quickly wipe out any savings.”

For buyers who want additional reassurance, a reputable dealer may prove the better option. Even then, don’t assume every vehicle has been inspected to the same standard.

Ask the dealer what checks have been carried out before the car was advertised and, for additional peace of mind, consider commissioning your own independent inspection. Although dealer prices are often higher, they may include servicing, preparation, warranties, finance options and after-sales support.

Mr Hosking said: “You’re not simply paying for the car. You’re also paying for greater consumer protection and somewhere to go if problems develop after the sale.”

Ultimately, he believes buyers should look beyond the sticker price.

He added: “The cheapest car is not always the best value. Whether buying privately or from a dealer, take your time, bring someone with you for a second opinion, check for warning lights, leaks or visible damage, and never let pressure from a seller rush you into a decision.”
